Oh love, you who makes us laugh, dream, kiss, cry… and live!
It was 2009 when the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts started planning a retrospective exhibition focused on Jean-Paul Gaultier’s work. The idea was to marry art with fashion, as they can be very intimate related. The exhibition “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk” opened in 2011 to a great success that continued during the following 5 years in various museums across the globe!
Love is love: wedding bliss for all à la Jean-Paul Gaultier
As a thank you gift to Quebec, M. Gaultier shared with the MMFA his collection of bridal couture, because every fashion show ends with the bridal gown. The result is the beautiful, short and sweet exhibition “Love is Love” in which 36 of JPG’s bridal creations are showcased around a wedding cake!! And beyond the thankfulness from the designer, we find his message of love and acceptance as this exhibition is intended for every couple, regardless of sex, cultural origin, race, etc.
In Montréal we are fiers!
Fiers as in proud, like in fierté as in pride. The MMFA’s efforts to encourage a more diverse and open view of the world did not end with the Love is Love exhibition. As such, I was invited to participate in this year’s Pride Parade or “Fierté Montréal” with the MMFA! The Museum’s float was a big wedding cake just like in the exhibition!! The turnaround was fantastic and the experience was just incredible! Love is such a beautiful feeling and it’s so contagious! I was very fortunate to have walked with amazing people full of love and acceptance in their hearts! The best anecdote comes from a friend’s mom. Here I’m talking about a very religious woman who instead of shaming her son for his homosexuality, has embraced him and is her number one supporter. She is an example for many people around who based on religious beliefs turn their backs on their beloved ones because they are gay. And she is an inspiration for me and many other people around her!
The talk with the mastermind behind the magic
One of the many perks of being a member of one of the MMFA’s donor circles is the invitations to amazing and fun events! The last one was an Art-Series, that usually involves a conference presented by a leader in the arts. This time, the conference was led by the incredibly charismatic and humble Thierry-Maxime Loriot, the curator of the “The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk”. During his presentation he talked about how the exhibition came to be and he also talked about his professional career from fashion model to art curator. He also revealed what his next project will be… but because there is nothing official yet, I cannot share this info with you! But be sure that I will let you know as soon as there is a public announcement made by the MMFA!
Experiencing the love
This whole Jean-Paul Gaulthier experience has been quite a journey! I remember visiting the first exhibition back in 2011 with one of my best friends and his 8 months old baby!!! At the time, I was still living in the Ottawa region and one of the reasons to visit Montreal was this exhibition! Then six years later, I can still live the magic of Jean-Paul Gaultier in different ways: dreaming of getting married (again lol) in a nice gown, walking alongside lovely people to show my support and love for all humans and having the pleasure of meeting amazing men and women who enjoy art and also believe that love is love is love is love!
Love is love, wedding bliss à la Jean-Paul Gaulthier is presented at the MMFA until October 9!
